College of the Canyons Star Party – October 21st!

The College of the Canyons Canyon Country campus will host its annual fall Star Party from 7-9:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, giving local residents the opportunity to see Jupiter and the rest of the night’s sky.

During the event, College of the Canyons faculty members and local astronomers will be on hand to provide audiences with information related to Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to view Jupiter through one of several high-powered telescopes.

College of the Canyons adjunct biology and physics professor David Michaels will present a short orientation lecture and question-and-answer session.

Star Party attendees are encouraged to get to campus early with picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs.

Coffee, hot chocolate, pizza and other food items will be available for purchase.

A portion of the concession sales from the Star Party are being donated to the Dr. Ram Manvi Memorial Scholarship to benefit students who are majoring in the fields of mathematics, science or engineering technology.

College to Career Day!

This Saturday, August 27th, College of the Canyons will be hosting their annual College to Career Day from 9 am – 1pm at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center located on the Valencia Campus. There will be more than 25 career programs on display featuring hands-on demonstrations from college faculty and industry professionals.

This event is open to everyone and will be a great opportunity for your student to get information on a variety of career programs.
Attendance is free.

Hart School District College and Career Fair is Coming September 7th!

The Hart School District is hosting a College and Career Fair on Wed.  September 7 from 6:30p.m. to 9 p.m. at West Ranch High School, to assist students with the very important step of drafting a career plan to be followed while making post-secondary education decisions.

All students are invited to attend and the evening is most appropriate for sophomores, juniors and seniors and their parents.

QuestBridge National College Match Scholarships for High School Seniors

The QuestBridge National College Match helps outstanding low-income high school seniors gain admission and full scholarships to some of the nation’s leading colleges. Last year, QuestBridge’s partner colleges offered over $100 million in financial aid to more than 1,300 students.

The College Match application will be available online at www.questbridge.org in early August and is due on September 30, 2011. Applying is free, as are application fees to partner colleges.

Education Program for Gifted and Talented Students at Stanford University

The Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) at Stanford University is a continuing project dedicated to developing and offering multimedia computer-based distance-learning courses. Combining technical and instructional expertise, EPGY provides high-ability students of all ages with an individualized educational experience, optimized in both pace and content. Through EPGY, students have access to courses in a variety of subjects at levels ranging from kindergarten through advanced-undergraduate. STAR PARTY!

STAR PARTY: Rio Norte along with the Los Angeles Astronomical Society will be holding a STAR party on Thursday May 5th, from 8-9 pm.  Telescopes will be available to view the night sky.  It is a family event, no drop offs.

The 2011 Mathematics Festival at UCLA

The UCLA Math Curtis Center and the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) will be hosting the 2011 UCLA Mathematics Festival sponsored by the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University. Students in grades 7 – 10 are invited to attend a keynote talk by Harvey Mudd mathematics professor Michael Orrison, who will speak on “Change of Perspective in Mathematics and Beyond” and a panel discussion on careers in mathematics. Following the keynote talk, there will be three hour-long sessions in which students will problem solve in groups with professors, international researchers and graduate students, as well as attend talks by professors and high school teachers.
